Ugly Beauty: Forever Chemicals aka PFAS
While consumers chase miracle potions to remain forever-young, a troubling trend is emerging that should cause a Botox-breaking-wrinkle!
Recent buzz surrounding ‘forever chemicals’—specifically PFAS—in cosmetics has raised alarm bells, with studies showing these persistent compounds lurking in everything from foundations to lipsticks. In fact, a 2021 study found PFAS in over half of 231 makeup products tested, sparking concern about their potential health risks and leaving beauty enthusiasts to wonder if their quest for eternal youth might come at an unexpected cost.
What Are PFAS and Why Are They Harmful?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as “forever chemicals,” have been around in products since the 1940s, particularly for their water- and oil-resistant properties (think nonstick cookware). However, PFAS do not break down naturally, meaning they linger in the environment and can also accumulate over time in the body. Studies have linked these chemicals to hormonal disruption, immune system suppression, and even an increased risk of certain cancers.
Regulatory Action: Europe Leads the Way
While the U.S. Congress is working toward a PFAS ban in non-essential products, including cosmetics, legislation has yet to take full effect. As of February 2025, only 10 states have restrictions on PFAS in cosmetics. Meanwhile, Europe—known for its stricter cosmetic regulations—is already ahead. Several European nations have proactively banned PFAS in beauty products, recognizing the urgency of the issue.
Additional note: In the United States, only 11 chemicals are banned in the formulation of cosmetics. Whereas in Europe, more than 1300 chemicals are banned. In consideration of ingredients alone, the US has a long way to go to clean up its formulations!
