Eyeing Injectables? Don’t Blink on Safety!
This Dry Eye Awareness Month, Dr. Rachna Murthy warns that misplaced injections near your eyes can cause more than a bruise!
Thinking of injectables near your eyes? Read this first. 👁️💉
When it comes to your eyes, there’s no room for shortcuts. The periorbital area—the delicate skin surrounding your eyes—is one of the highest-risk zones for cosmetic injectables. A misplaced injection doesn’t just bruise your ego—it can lead to serious complications, including but not limited to dry eye disease or even vision loss.
As Consultant oculoplastic and aesthetic surgeon Dr. Rachna Murthy warns:
“I sit on the complications faculty for Allergan and support doctors dealing with serious consequences of misplaced injections. Most complications could have been avoided with proper training and regulation.”
👀 Don’t Gamble With Your Vision—Or Your Comfort
In the UK, cosmetic injectables can legally be administered by non-medical professionals—even near the eyes.
In the US, only licensed medical providers—MDs, DOs, PAs, NPs, and RNs—can perform injectables, but even then, specialized training around the eye area is essential.
Regulatory changes are in motion (the UK expects new licensing rules by 2025), but for now, you are your own best safety advocate.
💧 Dry Eye: The Underestimated Side Effect
Injectables like Botox can trigger or worsen dry eye disease if given in too high a dose and in susceptible individuals, depending on injection placement and technique:
- Incomplete blinking due to weakened eyelid muscles
- Reduced tear production from impact on the lacrimal gland
- Disrupted meibomian gland function, leading to unstable tear film
In short, a tweakment too close to the eye could leave you with chronic irritation, redness, and blurry discomfort—not the bright-eyed beauty you envisioned.
✅ Before You Book:
- ✔️ Confirm credentials: Is your injector qualified and experienced in the periorbital area?
- ✔️ Ask about emergency readiness: Do they carry hyaluronidase? Can they handle vascular occlusion?
- ✔️ Avoid “too good to be true” deals: You’re not just paying for the product—you’re investing in the safety of your sight.
- ✔️ Stick to medical clinics, not salons, spas, or pop-ups.
