BEHIND THE

SCIENCE

DR. DAVID

A. SULLIVAN

There are individuals whose life’s work quietly reshapes an entire field. Dr. David A. Sullivan is one of them.

A LIFE DEDICATED TO THE SCIENCE OF VISION

Four Decades of Research Leadership

The eye area is one of the most sensitive parts of the face, yet most beauty products were never designed with ocular health in mind. ÈYES was created to rethink that standard.

Dr. Sullivan is the Founder of the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society, the world's leading scientific organization dedicated to tear film and ocular surface education. Under his leadership, TFOS has united and collaborated with experts from more than 100 countries and produced landmark global consensus reports that continue to shape clinical practice, research, and innovation worldwide.

Origins

For more than four decades, Dr. Sullivan has been a pioneering force in ocular surface disease research, advancing global understanding of dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, and the intricate role of hormones in eye health.

His career spans 38 years at Harvard Medical School and the Schepens Eye Research Institute, where his research helped lay the scientific foundations that guide modern ocular surface care.

Despite his extraordinary impact, over 260 peer-reviewed publications, numerous patIents, decades of NIH-funded research, and mentorship of generations of scientists, Dr. Sullivan has never sought the spotlight.

His influence is measured not in accolades, but in outcomes: improved diagnostics, better treatments, and millions of patients living with healthier vision.

THE INSPIRATION

For Eyes Are The Story, Dr. Sullivan’s work represents more than inspiration, it is the scientific backbone that inspired our mission.

His unwavering commitment to evidence, integrity, and global collaboration is deeply woven into our approach to eye-safe beauty and ocular wellness.

His influence is undeniable. His work has elevated the science of dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction to a global stage, empowering better care for millions.

CAREER & AWARDS

Dr. Sullivan discovered the significant impact of androgens in promoting lacrimal and meibomian gland function, which has led to successful, and currently ongoing, clinical trials of topical androgens for the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction.

With several international colleagues, Dr. Sullivan also discovered lubricin, the body’s unique anti-adhesive, anti-friction and anti-inflammatory protein on the ocular surface and its role in preventing corneal and conjunctival epitheliopathies in dry eye disease.

Dr. Sullivan and colleagues have developed a recombinant human lubricin and demonstrated in a Phase II clinical trial that this anti-stress protein significantly decreases the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. Ideally, these androgen and lubricin therapies will soon be available for the treatment of dry eye, which afflicts
more than 30 million people in the United States alone.Add the awards received in this period.
